Rare Red and White Food Stores work shirt or bowling shirt. Incredible condition, with only a few extremely faint spots on this otherwise spotless cotton gabardine. The red collar has bled a bit also. Found with another youths bowling shirt from the same era and evidence of a patch having been removed from left sleeve. An amazing piece of advertising and history. “Red and White” was the first store brand for grocery merchandise, named after the colors of the shelves in creator, S.M. Flickinger’s first store. The brand’s debut was on cans of coffee in 1908. The successful brand grew into a small chain of independent corner stores and mom-n-pops - all part of a bigger “family” or membership of grocers. This membership created a network of support to all of these small independent stores, including training, discounted store fixtures and other perks. There are several that remain in operation still today, including Durham’s own King’s Red and White on E Club Blvd. The other bowler shirt it was found with belonged to an “East durham gra-y” team.
